Ms. Polacco, my wife Melissa, and daughter Jessica
I had a great day today with the family. I read on the website for Politics & Prose that Patricia Polacco was doing a signing this morning. My wife did not get the chance years ago to see her in person when Mr. B had her visit CCES. And my daughter wasn't even born yet either. So we drove down to see her, really not knowing what to expect. I knew there wasn't going to be a book talk, or anything like that, since it was a "book signing only." So we took the camera, and my wife took most of her books that she had while she was teaching. I also picked up two books for the kids (1 each) from Daedalus the other day. My plan was also to pick up a copy of her new book (see previous blog post) about her former art teacher. Well, it was a good time had by all. Of course, Ms. Polacco was great. She was gracious, kind, and actually talked with us for a while. She personalized my book for the classroom, and my wife and kids' as well. I was so glad my wife had the chance to meet her. Afterward as we drove back home, we discussed where to get lunch. To celebrate, we finally made the trek to the Grilled Cheese & Company in Catonsville. Delicious! What a wonderful day!

Another great PTA Carnival tonight! Very busy for me, as it should be. One person asked tonight how many faces did I paint? I have no idea, but I know it was a ton. Most popular item of the evening was mustaches and butterflies. And no, that wasn't butterflies with mustaches... I have to give a lot of credit to Mrs. O'Brien for organizing everything. She'll be heading to older, greener pastures next year with her youngest going to middle school. She's done such a great job over the years with the carnival. It's going to be hard to fill those shoes! I also want to give some shout outs for helping out tonight. To my colleague/partner in crime in the art room, Mrs. Riley, and to Mrs. Adler and Mrs. Sutker. They all came out and helped in the trenches painting faces tonight. I also want to thank the former students who come by and check in with me. I love seeing the formers and seeing what they're doing (lots of memories). Off to enjoy some chair time catching up with the kids before they hit the hay....
Wow! Another great show at the 9:30 Club in DC. My folks came up to visit and were able to watch the kids so that Melissa and I could see Ben Harper in concert. He is one of our favorite musicians, perhaps the favorite overall. We've been able to see him several time in concert, and he never disappoints. Last night was no different. His latest cd that came out this past winter was done in combination with blues musician/legend Charlie Musselwhite. Normally I'm not a huge blues fan, but this cd is fantastic! They played the whole album in its entirety at the show, plus several blues numbers where Charlie sang instead of playing harmonica. The best may have been when they covered When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin. This was the second time I've seen this song played live. The first was by Page and Plant in the flesh on their tour in 1995 (at what used to be the USAir Arena). I have to say this was the best by far. Unbelievable!
I do have to say I was a little disappointed. Not by the music. I was really looking forward to getting their signatures on their cd and a copy of Downbeat that they were featured on a while ago. I'm not sure what happened, but they all got into a van that was in the alley and drove off. Maybe next time... |
