Youth Art Month
March is nationally recognized as Youth Art Month (YAM). At CCES, we take that proclamation very seriously. YAM is always something highly anticipated by the fifth graders, and with good reason. Every year we have a YAM Student Committee, comprised of 15 fifth graders.
The students on the committee promote art education and the celebration of Youth Art Month in two major ways. The first is by painting and displaying a large banner (3'x12'). The idea/theme for the banner is completely student generated. And they spend one day after school until 7:30pm drawing and painting the banner. The second is that we have daily "Artist of the Day" announcements in the morning. Students choose artists that they would like to learn more about, and write a short biography to present over the morning school announcements. They also design a poster to accompany the announcement that goes on display outside of the Art Room. The committee does all of the work for YAM outside of the school day. As a reward for this hard work, these fifth graders get to go along on the yearly 4th grade Art Field Trip. Below, you'll see a few examples of posters that students have created for their "Artist of the Day" and pictures of all of the YAM banners that have been created to date.
