Wow! Another great show at the 9:30 Club in DC. My folks came up to visit and were able to watch the kids so that Melissa and I could see Ben Harper in concert. He is one of our favorite musicians, perhaps the favorite overall. We've been able to see him several time in concert, and he never disappoints. Last night was no different. His latest cd that came out this past winter was done in combination with blues musician/legend Charlie Musselwhite. Normally I'm not a huge blues fan, but this cd is fantastic! They played the whole album in its entirety at the show, plus several blues numbers where Charlie sang instead of playing harmonica. The best may have been when they covered When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin. This was the second time I've seen this song played live. The first was by Page and Plant in the flesh on their tour in 1995 (at what used to be the USAir Arena). I have to say this was the best by far. Unbelievable!
I do have to say I was a little disappointed. Not by the music. I was really looking forward to getting their signatures on their cd and a copy of Downbeat that they were featured on a while ago. I'm not sure what happened, but they all got into a van that was in the alley and drove off. Maybe next time...
