No NOLA for me this Summer. I have to admit, I'm bummed. I already had things going in my mind of what I would work on and things I would do, places I would visit. Not understanding why either. I thought preference was given to folks who hadn't taken a Gilder-Lehrman seminars before. But oh well. My friend that applied didn't get in either. I guess we'll try again next year...

I heard of another passing from my Sunday class. I teach art on Sundays as well, to a group of senior citizens at Heartlands in Ellicott City. Her name was Anne and she was 96 I believe. I've taught at that center for over four years now. It never, never gets any easier to say goodbye to those people. And the end of each Sunday class gets harder and harder, because deep down I know it could be the last time I see them. Rest in peace Anne. It was a pleasure knowing you and getting to watch you work over the past four years...
Helen Harrison (r) I had a great time today at the SMAA in D.C. As part of the centennial of Jackson Pollock's birth, they have an exhibition featuring some papers, etc. from their archives. The small exhibition was guest curated by Helen Harrison. She is the director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center on Long Island. She was giving a gallery talk/lecture today about the items in the exhibition. It was a great lecture, and I had some time afterwards to talk a little bit one-on-one with Ms. Harrison. The whole time I was yearning for the day I was able to spend at the center in the summer of '09. It was certainly a formative experience for me, finally getting the chance to see the house and studio. Another enjoyable moment today was being asked 20 questions by another person in the audience on what it's like teaching art to young children. Let's just say we talked for about an hour. I have the give this wonderful woman some extreme credit. She's probably in her early 80's, lives in a retirement village in Arlington, and hopped in a cab just to make it today, walker and all. That's dedication my friends... |
