Decisions, decisions, decisions. I've been perusing the NEH schedule for this coming summer. I'm torn, very torn. So many things look interesting. I'm think about one on Frank Lloyd Wright in Iowa. Another one that looks good is about the Pueblo Indians in the Colorado. There is one in San Diego on the beginnings of the west coast, prior to westward expansion. Lastly, one on the Native Americans of New England. I have a lot of thinking to do...

Yep, I was able to travel to NYC again. This time was pretty much strictly professional. An art teacher friend of mine at another school invited me on their school's trip to NYC. His school has a day trip to NYC every year, and he invited me along, and another colleague/friend of ours. It was great!
We left at 7am and arrived near the Port Authority in NYC around 10:30am. We started walking along 42nd Street toward 5th Avenue. We stopped in St. Patrick's Cathedral for a bit and then on uptown to the Upper East Side to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My one friend is big into Asian Art and Ceramics, and that was just one of the many exhibitions at the Met. We checked that out, and to be honest, it was a wonderful exhibit. Normally that type of art is not my cup of tea, but there was some really beautiful pieces. In addition to that exhibit, that were a few others that we really wanted to see as well. There is an exhibit on Andy Warhol and the artists that were influenced by him after he came on the scen, and after his death. I must be honest here, I was not as impressed with this one. I like some of Warhol's art, however I think the merit of his influence on the art world (good or bad) can be debated for some time. And there were certainly some pieces by some of the artists in the show that were a little offensive, and not suitable for children. I think the other problem for me was viewing this show, after seeing the George Bellows exhibit. The Bellows exhibit was unbelievable. It was so nice to see more of his work beyond the boxer paintings that are more widely known. I've been interested in him since a lecture I had as an undergrad on the Ashcan school. He has some wonderful paintings, and it is a type of painting that just isn't seen very often anymore. So anything we viewed afterward was just going to pale in comparison. After spending several hours at the Met, we started walking around town a bit more. We stopped in to eat at a little sandwich place that I heard about, Wrap N Run. We had a great dinner, walked around some more and it was time to head home. We met the bus, and embarked on our way home. It was a great day of viewing great art, talking shop, swapping stories, etc. What a great day... OMG! I just forgot that the Summer 2013 schedule for the NEH has been released! I must check it out to see what is offered, and what looks interesting. More info. to follow...
