Well today was the day. I found out via email about my acceptances this summer for the NEH programs. I was accepted to both the Frank Lloyd Wright workshop in Iowa and the Empires of the Wind in San Diego. What to choose what to choose? It will literally have to be weighing pros and cons in order to figure out where to go.
In Iowa, I'll get a chance to learn about one of my faves, Frank Lloyd Wright. We'll even stay in a hotel that was designed by him. Wright is undoubtedly someone that I would love to learn more about, as he inspires a lot of what I do as both an artist and teacher. We will get to see some examples by him and his students and/or contemporaries. Grad credits will be offered as well. This is important because MD (State Dept. of Ed.) doesn't accept professional development units from outside of the state. And there are some sites that I would like to see. Jackson Pollock has a painting at the University of Iowa that I'd love to see. It does not travel, and it's something I'd love to see in person. Also the childhood home of Bix Beiderbecke, a famous jazz artist (cornet), is located in Iowa. The downside is it is in Iowa. And getting to Mason City won't be that easy. I'll have to fly into Des Moines, and either rent a car or find some sort of a shuttle to Mason City, a 2-3 hour trip. I would also need transportation to check out the other things I'd like to see. In San Diego, I'll get a chance to learn about the exploration of the Pacific Coast. This is a chance to learn something completely new to me, as the discussion will center on the exploration of that region around the time of the Jamestown settlement on the east coast. Of course there is plenty to see in San Diego. My Dad always talks about how he loved traveling there for work, when it was necessary. Plus, you can't beat the weather. There will be credits offered for sure. Again, this is important because MD (State Dept. of Ed.) doesn't accept professional development units from outside of the state. And the entirety of the last day will be spent sailing on a very large schooner, around 150' long. Regardless, I have until the end of the week to make up my mind. I have to let folks know by Friday. We shall see...
